Biolumic

Increasing yields by programming plants with light

BioLumic develops and deploys light signals that unlock the natural genetic potential of seeds and seedlings—without requiring use of chemicals or genetic modification. It’s technology uses a ground-breaking culmination of photobiology, engineering and data science.  This technology triggers biological mechanisms that have demonstrated increases in plant yield, vigor, and disease resistance.

BioLumic has carried out large scale trials in key crop growing regions around the world, and it’s ultraviolet light systems have significantly increase yields of transplanted crops (nursery to field) by up to 41%.

BioLumic was founded by Dr. Jason Wargent based at Massey University.  Jason is a world-leading plant UV photobiologist, with more than 15 years of research know-how in the space. In addition to leading the science vision and science team as Chief Science Officer , he leads the company’s IP strategy.  US based CEO Steve Sibullkin leads the team of plant scientists, agronomists, engineers and data scientists based in the United States and New Zealand working every day to maximise the power of UV.

Biolumic first engaged with Enterprise Angels back in 2014 and has seen good support from investors in subsequent capital raises as the company has grown.

In February 2021 NZGCP interviewed Dr Jason Wargent Biolumic founder and Chief Science Officer as part of their Kōrerorero series. Read the conversation here.
