Wellumio is a New Zealand medical technology company developing Axana, a portable, AI-powered MRI device for rapid stroke diagnosis. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, yet most patients miss the critical “golden hour” for treatment due to slow, inaccessible imaging. Axana solves this by delivering fast, bedside brain scans in emergency departments, ambulances, and rural hospitals—making gold-standard diagnostics available anywhere. Axana’s proprietary technology provides accurate, radiation-free results in just four minutes, without the need for contrast agents or specialized rooms. The device is lightweight, battery-powered, and validated against standard MRI systems. Wellumio offers flexible purchase and subscription options to suit different healthcare providers. The global market for stroke diagnostics is significant, with a combined in-hospital and pre-hospital opportunity exceeding US$8.9 billion. Wellumio has completed a successful feasibility study at Royal Melbourne Hospital and secured partnerships with leading organizations, including Medtronic and the Australian Stroke Alliance. Over 30 US stroke centers have already expressed strong interest. Wellumio’s business model combines capital sales and subscriptions, supporting broad adoption and recurring revenue. Its competitive edge lies in Axana’s portability, speed, and clinical validation, backed by strategic partnerships. The team brings deep expertise in medicine, physics, product development, and global healthcare, led by Dr Shieak Tzeng and Dr Sergei Obruchkov, with support from experienced executives and advisors. Wellumio is raising up to $7.9 million at an $18 million pre-money valuation, with the minimum round already met and Nuance Capital as lead investor. Funds will drive product development, certification, clinical trials, and regulatory approvals, with a Series A round planned for commercial launch.
